When Will Local Government Elections Be Held in Punjab? Election Commission Announces February 7, 2027, as Date for First Phase; Rejects Government Request for Further Delay
LAHORE: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has officially declared that the first phase of local government elections in Punjab will take place on 7th February 2027.
The four-member bench headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja issued the final order after a detailed hearing in the case of Punjab local body elections.
The Election Commission’s decision on the Local Polls in Punjab are highlighted below:
Key changes in Provincial Requests: The Punjab government had initially made a request for local elections in April 2027. The Punjab Cabinet Committee then made another request to hold polls in January or February 2027, however, citing better weather conditions in February.
During the proceedings, Punjab’s Chief Secretary had asked the ECP for another two-month period of relaxation to hold the elections from January to March as it was sheer impracticality due to freezing weather, heavy smog, celebration during Basant and impending examinations.
However, despite administrative anxieties about smog, thick fog, bad weather, Ramazan, and the inability of teachers to teach during the elections, the Election Commission took all these arguments into account and formally decided on February 7, 2027 to begin the first phase of the elections.
