US Afghanistan War Commission Delegation Calls on Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir at GHQ, Discusses Regional Security and Lessons from Afghan Conflict
RAWALPINDI: The delegation led by high-level Americans delegation visited the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi and held a detailed and substantive meeting with Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir.
The talks focused on issues of common professional interest, the changing regional security landscape and the current political and security situation in Afghanistan, according to a press release by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

Commission Leadership: Columnist Shamilah Chaudhry and Dr. Colin F. Jackson co-chaired the visiting US delegation. The independent commission is now doing a full study of the 20-year war in Afghanistan, including the involvement, strategy and lessons learned of the United States.
The talks encompassed a detailed assessment of Pakistan’s key role in the Afghan history and its diplomatic efforts and immense sacrifices during the 20-year long Afghan conflict.

In the briefing, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir explained Pakistan’s principled position on the Afghan security situation and raised the gravity of the multiple challenges Pakistan was facing as a frontline state in the backdrop of the protracted security crisis in Afghanistan.
Strategic Assessment: The Field Marshal emphasized the absolute need to take into account the geo-strategic, diplomatic and operational perspective of the Afghan war, as well as the blowback effects of the past, and incorporate them into contemporary assessments of the country.
Recognition of sacrifice: The US delegation visiting Pakistan paid tribute to Pakistan’s long-standing role, resilience and sustained efforts to promote peace and fight against terrorism in the region.
