WASHINGTON : The U.S. military is considering options for attacking Iran’s key nuclear and energy facilities with the world’s most potent non-nuclear weapon, according to recent media reports.

Strategic planners are considering the possibility of using the GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast in any military escalation against Tehran, known as the “Mother of All Bombs” (MOAB), according to American television network CNN.

The CNN report touched upon some key points, and these are the points to consider from a U.S. strategic perspective.
The Trump administration would like a situation where it could make a bold, public announcement of a victory after any military engagement. The Trump administration wants a situation where it could make a bold, public announcement of a victory after any military engagement, the report says. But defense analysts are split when it comes to whether the hefty bomb will give Washington what it wants in the long term.

The GBU-43 is one of the largest conventional (non-nuclear) weapons that have ever been designed. The United States military has used this deadly weapon on just one occasion in combat, in a 2017 attack on Afghanistan’s militant cave networks.

The current state of deliberations: CNN’s defense sources confirm that the use of the super-heavy munition is now being considered as a viable tactical option, but officials emphasized that no final and binding decision has been officially ratified by the White House or the Pentagon.
