PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court has served formal notices on the federal government, Chief Secretary and others who were involved in the detention of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, Babar Saleem Swati, KP Assembly Speaker, and others in petitions filed for their answers.

The formal proceedings were carried out by a two-member bench led by Justice Syed Arshad Ali of Peshawar High Court. In the course of the hearing, the petitioner’s lawyer told the court that after the state of emergency and Governor’s Rule were declared, the Chief Minister, the Speaker of the Assembly Junaid Akbar, and many others were arrested and that their whereabouts are still not known. The counsel emphasized that Speaker Babar Saleem Swati was in a constitutional position, but he was detained anyway.

During the hearing, Justice Syed Arshad Ali asked the counsel about the whereabouts of the Chief Minister and that why the chief secretary was not formally appointed as a party in the original petition.

A notice was sent to all relevant authorities and the federal government was asked to provide detailed responses on the detentions, as well as the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

The court, after hearing the preliminary arguments, adjourned the recovery cases for further consideration until November 3.
