Pakistan Ranks Among Top Borrowers Globally for Climate Change Financing as IMF Approves $1.37 Billion Support Package
ISLAMABAD : According to the latest statistics, released by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Pakistan has officially been included in the list of countries which are getting maximum international loans for combating and mitigating the adverse effect of climate change.
The country has been ranked 9th among the 90 countries in the financial health and training participant ranking by the IMF for the year of fiscal 2026. In addition, the global lender’s recently published report detailed dedicated financial assistance programs to help those impacted by flooding and to strengthen the long-term resilience of the global climate.
IMF Allocations, Breakdown and Regional Financing
The IMF data shows financing packages were provided to five target countries. In the Middle East and Central Asia region, Pakistan is the biggest recipient of funding:
Total SDR allocation for the region was about 1.8 billion of which 1 billion SDR was allocated to Pakistan.
This allocation represents a financial package that has been approved for about $1.37 billion.
The generous support reflects the global community’s awareness of Pakistan’s high levels of climate change sensitivity to weather anomalies, heavy rainfall during the monsoon season and glacial melt.
