Pakistan and Qatar Playing a Vital Role in De-escalating Current Tensions: Esmail Baghaei
TEHRAN: Iranian Foreign Minister Spokesperson Esmail Baghaei has said Pakistan and Qatar have a significant role in mitigating the current tensions in the region.
In his weekly news briefing, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that Iran does not decide on matters based on deadlines or pressure, and the duration of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was only for the purpose of removing sanctions and resolving the nuclear issue.
Failure to fulfill the MoU and Regional Talks
Esmail Baghaei said negotiations have not resumed yet because of the US’s failure to adhere to the MoU, alleging that Washington has violated the ceasefire agreement only a few weeks after it was signed in Pakistan’s capital Islamabad.
On maritime matters, he added, discussions are underway with Oman on the Strait of Hormuz, and both countries are engaged in developing procedures for maritime traffic. In reiterating Tehran’s position, Baghaei said that Iran’s firmness had made the calculations of its adversaries wrong and that Iran had contact with its neighbour Pakistan and also with Qatar.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson explicitly pointed out that there was no mention of a “60-day deadline” in the MoU.
