Pakistan and Japan Sign Grant Agreement Worth $16.4 Million for Flood Protection Project in Sindh
ISLAMABAD: A grant agreement was signed between the Government of Pakistan and Government of Japan to strengthen the flood protection and disaster resilience infrastructure of Sindh Province.
The Government of Japan will contribute a total of 2.58 billion Japanese yen (about $16.4 million USD) through a grant, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs (EAD) spokesperson. Additional Secretary for Economic Affairs Sabina Qureshi and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Senior Representative Sugawara Takayuki signed the formal grant agreement in Islamabad.
Project Scope and Strengthening Embankments
The major goal of the project is to strengthen flood management infrastructure in Sindh, to improve disaster preparedness and risk mitigation of vulnerable people living along the river basin.
In this project, strengthening and rehabilitation works will be undertaken at the Old Abad Bund on the right bank side of Indus River in Larkana.
Every effort was made to ensure that all High-Level Signings and Diplomatic Remarks remain out of the public eye.
The Economic Affairs Secretary, Muhammad Humair Karim and the Japanese Ambassador, Akamatsu Shuichi signed the Exchange of Notes and Record of Discussion separately.
In the ceremony, Secretary Muhammad Humair Karim recognized the Japanese government as a long-term and trusted development partner and praised its ongoing friendship and developmental assistance. The Japanese Ambassador, Akamatsu Shuichi, reiterated Japan’s intention to further deepen the friendly relations and cooperation between the two countries.
