Most Infant Deaths at PIMS Hospital Caused by Suffocation, Says Tariq Fazal Chaudhry
ISLAMABAD: The chief cause of the deaths of most newborn babies in the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) hospital in the tragic fire was the accumulation of heavy smoke and suffocation in the hospital’s ward, Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, the Federal Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, has said.
After visiting the PIMS hospital, Tariq Fazal Chaudhry told the media that the fire started due to a short circuit in an electrical wiring, gas pipes, and plastic medical equipment played a role in its speed. He added that the blaze was worsened by the smoke from inhalation and oxygen supply lines and resulted in innocent lives being lost.

The incident was described as deeply tragic and harrowing, with the Federal Minister saying he was deeply saddened and grieved for the babies’ deaths, adding that it ’caused a lot of pain to his heart.
He said that the government is standing with them and shares their agony in this hour of sorrow. Chaudhry pointed out the importance of implementing all preventive measures and preparedness measures in hospitals and public institutions to avoid such catastrophic incidents. He ended his message with sincerity to the parents of the deceased children and prayers for eternal rest for the deceased children.
