Jamaat-e-Islami Holds Nationwide Strike Against Petroleum Levy and Inflation

LAHORE: The Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) is calling for a nationwide strike today in protest of the hefty petroleum levies and soaring inflation. Jamaat-e-Islami Emir Hafiz Naeem, in a sit-in in Lahore, condemned the ruling PML-N saying that the government follows negotiations on one side and adopts coercive measures on the other. After the strike today, the party will announce its future course of action, he said.

In the opening statement, Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman said that the government has put all its burden on the shoulders of the common people for the inflation while pushing on its unjustified and unnecessary big spending. He asked about the abolition of luxury cars, free electricity for ministers and government officials.

The Government Delegation was set to visit talks.
A high-level government delegation will visit Mansoorah today for high-level talks with the leadership of Jamaat-e-Islami in the meantime.

The discussions will be geared towards Jamaat-e-Islami’s fundamental demands to move towards a resolution and for the end of the current sit-in.

The government delegation is coming to the meeting with a goodwill and they would rather reach a solution through the constructive meeting with the protesters instead of holding a sit-in and rally for too long, said Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal. He pointed out that the government committee will hold a meeting with JI leadership in Mansoorah at 3:00 PM, emphasising the need for peace and economic stability in Pakistan.
