Intensifying Youth Protests in India: Opposition Marches Toward Supreme Court Demanding Election Chief’s Resignation

Intensifying Youth Protests and Opposition March Toward Supreme Court in New Delhi; Thousands of Police and Paramilitary Personnel Deployed Across the Capital

NEW DELHI: Protests against Indian government Leader Narendra Modi have escalated sharply with large-scale demonstrations in the national capital and the opposition parties and youth groups making a high-stakes march to the Supreme Court.

The march was organised by the opposition INDIA bloc and other student organisations, who had alleged electoral roll manipulation and irregularities in the elections, and called for the immediate resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner.

Massive Security Deployment: In response to the protests and to prevent access, the government deployed thousands of police and paramilitary personnel in central New Delhi, creating what people termed a ‘fortress’ with barricades and closures at many major metro stations.

The protesters and the activists came from across the country, hundreds of them from big cities such as Mumbai and the farthest corners of the country.

Opposition Leadership & Formal Petitions: Opposition leader Lok Sabha Speaker Rahul Gandhi, along with other party leaders led by YSR Congress President Kirankumar Reddy, walked in a procession with their followers and submitted petitions with their formal signatures to the Supreme Court registry, calling for structural electoral reforms and the resignation of the election chief.

Political Retaliation: The protests have led to strong criticism from officials of the ruling party, adding to the political tensions between the state and opposition forces regarding the democratic institutions and the integrity of the electoral process.
