Inflation Surge Grips Pakistan as Vegetable, Fruit, and Meat Prices Skyrocket Amid Widespread Market Violations
ISLAMABAD : In Pakistan, the people are struggling to afford their basic food and essentials, with the price of food, vegetables, fruit and meat all continuing to rise, leaving a fresh wave of crushing inflation in major urban centres.
Market checks conducted in the provincial centres indicate a serious deficiency in the enforcement of the prices, where retailers are blatantly ignoring the official price lists.
Regional Price Breakdown Across Major Cities
The official rate lists have failed to work in provincial capital markets (Lahore: Vegetables & Produce). Onion price is at Rs200 per kg against the official rate of Rs195, tomato at Rs150, capsicum at Rs280, bitter gourd (karela) at Rs220 and cauliflower at Rs180 per kg.
Faisalabad (Meat Market Surge): The meat prices in Faisalabad have experienced an alarming rise. There is no official notification that has been adhered to and the price of beef is being quoted at Rs1,500 per kg, while mutton has increased to exorbitant Rs3,000 per kg.
However, there is an increase in the prices of flour and produce in Peshawar, a 20 kg bag of fine flour is up by Rs100 to Rs3,150 in this region. In the meantime, the Quetta markets saw steep increases, with tomatoes, onions, okra, and green peas seeing uptick of Rs50 per kg.
The citizens have been pressing district administrations and price control magistrates to take action against the rise in prices and observe the official price list.
