Heavy Rains Hit Twin Cities: Nala Lai Water Level Rises, Evacuations Underway
Heavy rain swept Rawalpindi and Islamabad overnight, flooding low-lying areas and alerting to flooding in Nala Lai which rose to dangerous levels, prompting authorities to declare evacuations in Gawalmandi and Kataria in Rawalpindi.
Water level in Nala Lai was rapidly rising due to continuous spell of heavy rain since late last night and during the morning hours. Residents were warned about the floods by sounding of the warning sirens throughout Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
The water level at the Kataria station of Nala Lai was 22 feet and at Gawalmandi it was 19 feet, according to the sources from Met and district.
The district administration of Rawalpindi has approached the Pakistan Army for help in emergency rescue operations and to deal with any possible flood hazard.
Emergency has been declared in the low-lying areas and the authorities strongly advised the citizens to stay away from the Nala Lai, local streams and flood prone areas and have been strictly following safety guidelines.
