Government Withdraws Pakistan Telecommunication Reorganization Amendment Bill 2026
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Reorganization Amendment Bill 2026 has been withdrawn by the Federal government, as Minister Talal Chaudhry, State, moved the motion to withdraw the bill in the Senate during the current session, on behalf of the Minister of Information Technology.
Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja has made an important statement on the Pakistan Telecommunication Reorganization Act (PTRA) bill, indicating that an application has been submitted formally to the Senate to withdraw the PTRA bill. She assured that a new comprehensive bill which included all the essential and foundation points will be introduced soon.
Withdrawal and legislative plans: There are no plans to withdraw and no further legislative plans are in place.
The bill for the PTRA was set to expire within 30 days of the constitution, so she made the decision to pull it, she added. If the bill had not been withdrawn it would have passed to a joint sitting of the Parliament but at the present time there was no definite prospect of a joint sitting.
“This is to expedite the legislative process and to finish it off without any unnecessary delays,” Shaza Fatima Khawaja said in a response to having the bill pulled from the Senate.
The government will reiterate its commitment, she said, as a revamped and comprehensive bill on PTRA is set to be presented shortly to make sure all critical elements are incorporated to ensure the necessary legal framework is advanced.
