LONDON: Gold and silver were among the commodities that saw significant drops in world markets, as the global economy’s prospects for growth and recession changed.

Spot gold advanced 0.5 percent to $4,576.30 an ounce, as did US gold futures, which rose 0.8 percent to $4,629 per ounce.

Spot silver slipped 1.0 percent to $68.54 an ounce, palladium slipped 0.8 percent to $1,339.84 an ounce and platinum closed 0.6 percent lower at $1,834.83 an ounce.

Market reports show that the chances of a US interest rate rise now exceed a third with the December target at 74 per cent. According to financial analysts, assets, which do not yield any interest, such as gold, become less attractive given a high interest rate.
