US Sanctions and Economic Pressure Are Not Solutions to Middle East Crisis: China
BEIJING: China has said that unilateral sanctions and economic pressure by the United States won’t help in solving the current Middle East conflict.The comment comes amid Washington’s ongoing push for world powers, including Beijing, to join the move to economically isolate Tehran. During a press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated that the sanctions and pressure do not solve the underlying issues of tensions in the region.
He advised all concerned to exercise caution and take responsible measures, and settle differences through political and diplomatic means. Washington says its top economic pressure campaign is to limit Iran’s regional influence, but Tehran has flatly rejected the measures as economic terrorism.Earlier, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent spoke about coordinated economic isolation measures, and asked China, as a big purchaser of energy, to cooperate with international shipping and trade routes.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry, in turn, “condemned the unlawful unilateral sanctions which do not have the support of international law or the United Nations Security Council”.
