Diplomatic Setback for Modi: Bangladesh PM Refuses India Visit Until Sheikh Hasina Extradition
DHAKA: The Modi government has suffered another diplomatic disaster as the Bangladeshi Prime Minister has reportedly vowed not to visit India until the extradition of former leader Sheikh Hasina is finalised.
The Indian publication The Hindu reports that Bangladesh has ensured Prime Minister Tarique Rahman would not conduct an official visit to India unless New Delhi hands Wajid Hasina and others who are wanted for serious charges, among others, over to the country.
Foreign Ministry Statement
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson AKM Shahidul Karim said India needs to provide a proper atmosphere for the Prime Minister’s visit by expediting the extradition process of the former leader and the others.
When Prime Tarique Rahman came to office, he decided to go to Malaysia and China instead of India, according to the report. Sheikh Hasina was also earlier sentenced to death by a Bangladeshi court over her alleged ‘crimes against humanity’.
Experts in the region pointed out that allowing criminals to hide in their territories and sending their proxies to other states, violates regional stability and opposes international conventions.
