Pakistan Assumes Presidency of the United Nations Conference on Disarmament

GENEVA: The spokesperson from the Foreign Office said that Pakistan has taken over the chairmanship of the United Nations Disarmament Conference.

The spokesperson said that Additional Secretary for Arms Control and Disarmament Tahir Andrabi is chairing the sessions of the conference on Pakistan’s behalf.

Pakistan is currently the last President for the conference session of 2026, presiding over the negotiations on the conference’s annual report, as well as the resolution of the First Committee of the UN General Assembly. The spokesperson said Pakistan has started consultative processes as president, and Tahir Andrabi headed a meeting of past presidents of the 2026 session and consulting with delegates of different regional groups.

Significance of the Forum
The UN Conference on Disarmament is the only multilateral forum in the world for negotiations on arms control agreements, the Foreign Office said. The forum is set up in Geneva with 65 member-states, all of which are nuclear powers.

The conference will be discussing issues such as nuclear arms race, the militarization of outer space, and other pivotal issues in the world today. The Foreign Office spokesperson said that the assumption of the Presidency at this juncture is a sign of the international community’s trust in Pakistan’s constructive diplomatic leadership.
