Powerful 7.7 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Off Indonesia’s Coast, Aftershocks Continue
JAKARTA:Early Saturday morning, a strong 7.7 Richter Scale tremor shook near the coast of Indonesia, sending a series of aftershocks and panic through Indonesia. The shallow undersea quake occurred at Flores Island off the northern coast of the island at 0558 local time at a depth of around 10 to 15 kilometers, according to the seismological centers.
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency of Indonesia (BMKG) first warned the surrounding coastal areas of a potential tsunami, but was able to cancel the warning a few hours later after observing equipment did not indicate dangerous sea-level movements. The Tsunami Warning Center for Australia has confirmed that the offshore tremor did not create any tsunami threat to Australia and its islands.
Emergency and rescue teams have been sent to heavily affected regions like Maumere and Ruteng districts on the Flores Island to help people under debris from collapsed buildings. Initial investigations confirm several injuries and authorities say it will take time to see the full extent of the damage in isolated and mountainous regions. The violent shake caused everyone to flee their houses and run to the streets. Images captured at the local ports showed parts of concrete terminal buildings collapsing near to the ferry boarding areas, and that hospitals established temporary outdoor triage facilities as a precaution.
The National Disaster Management Agency said that maintaining public safety and reducing further risks from the aftershocks were the most important issues. Residents have been asked to remain calm, not get close to damaged or cracked buildings, or go to coastal areas until advised to do so. More detailed damage assessments are being conducted.
