National Assembly Extends Current Session Until October 30 for Crucial Legislation; Key Legal Amendments Linked to IMF Conditions and Supreme Court Rulings Scheduled

ISLAMABAD: Sources in the parliament confirm that the government has agreed to see the current session of the National Assembly extend until October 30 and a number of essential bills and legislation are on the agenda for formal approval by the lower house.

The National Assembly session was originally scheduled to end on October 26 but the plan has been extended by four days to ensure the passage of critical legislation.

The National Assembly’s extension of this session and its legislative agenda are highlighted below.
Important bills to be enacted in the Parliament are expected to be introduced by the government, such as amendments of some existing laws based on recent Supreme Court decisions and to meet the strict structural benchmarks imposed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), sources in the Parliament said.

Political consensus achieved: The ruling coalition has fully brought key allies on board, especially the Pakistan People Party (PPP), on the legislative agenda and the proposed changes to the law.

The longer days will provide lawmakers plenty of opportunity to debate, review and act on the government bills they have prioritized for action before the session officially ends at the end of the month.
