ISLAMABAD: A formal call to attention notice has been submitted by the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) Senator Kamran Murtaza in the Senate of Pakistan against the increasing number of alleged police encounters and extrajudicial killings across the country.
The text of notice filed by the opposition senator raises grave concerns on certain incidents, alleging that both the accused in the Laiba Ejaz case and another accused named Tauqeer in Multan were killed in alleged police encounters. Senator Murtaza stated that police department is in deep crisis on all levels, political, systemic and administrative.
The following are key highlights of a Call to Attention Notice that Senator Kamran Murtaza issued in the Senate.
Erosion of Rule of Law: Senator Murtaza argued that the staged encounters are becoming more common and are threatening the Rule of Law and the trust of the people in the State institutions.
Institutional Failures and Governance Deficits: The notice identifies a critical need for the police department to be structurally corrected, free from political interference and administrative inefficiencies, through legislation and executive action.
Low public trust in the police: JUI lawmaker expressed concern over the grave consequences of the systemic threats, poor service delivery, and high perception of corruption among police officers that is affecting citizens’ trust in the police.
