PIMS Hospital to Function Under a Board of Governors With a Three-Year Tenure, Recommends Reform Committee; Open Market CEO Appointment and Legal Framework Planned After PM’s Approval

ISLAMABAD: The special committee set up by the Prime Minister for institutional reforms at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has come up with some major structural recommendations and recommended that the top hospital run under an independent Board of Governors (BoG).

At the second meeting of the reform committee, the administrators, medical and management committees reviewed the various administrative, medical and management improvements, along with the legal and administrative structures needed to transform the functioning of the hospital. The committee suggested that the board members will have a three-year term.

The following are some of the key proposals in the Hospital Reform Committee’s recommendations (PIMS) made by the Committee:
Board of Governors Oversight: The governance structure for the operation of PIMS will move to a dedicated Board of Governors that will provide structure and policy direction.

Market Based Appointment of CEO: The reform program provides for the appointment of a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) from the open job market to ensure professional management of the hospital.

The new governance of the PIMS will be formally created with the legal draft after the Prime Minister’s final approval, and this will lead to significant improvements in the healthcare service.
