ISLAMABAD: Reliable political sources indicate that the federal government has agreed to immediately arrange a high-level meeting between PM Shehbaz Sharif and Opposition Leader Mehmood Khan Achakzai after Sharif’s return to the country.
A broad-based agenda is under discussion and the government is in the process of reaching out to the opposition leader himself to manage the timing of the meeting.
Key issues and baseline demands set out
The opposition leader will present a formal charter of demands to the PM during the next meeting, stressing the supremacy of the Constitution and law, and enhancing the role of Parliament.
Prisoner Rights and Medical Facilities: The opposition will make a fresh appeal on these issues, which include prisoner rights and the provision of adequate medical facilities for the founding chairman.
The key discussion will also be on administrative vacancies in the Electoral Commission, such as the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and two members. PM Shehbaz Sharif is likely to ask the opposition leader for three formal names for the sake of consensus on the constitutional appointments.
