Eight US Service Members Injured in Iranian Cruise Missile Attack on American Vessel in Strait of Hormuz, US Officials Confirm
WASHINGTON : The United States has confirmed that eight U.S. military personnel have been injured after being hit by a direct cruise missile attack from Iranian forces against a U.S. vessel in the Strait of Hormuz.
The attack came two weeks ago in the crucial commercial waterway, and according to reports from American media the naval vessel was attacked and injured by the high precision strike, which caused shrapnel and blast damage to the crew.
Increasing casualties and Pentagon revelations
The confirmation comes on the heels of growing concern about casualty rates in the current military action:
Reports from the Pentagon and the Inspector General indicate American military casualties in the first four months of the war (28 Feb to 30 Jun 2026) are much higher than official figures, with 18 combat and non-combat deaths and 417 injuries, for instance, reported by the Washington Post prior to the release of the reports.
Equipment Losses: The Inspector General’s numbers also reveal that in the first few months of the conflict, Iran dropped 18 US military planes and helicopters, and 30 advanced drones.
Hostilities in the Persian Gulf have been de-escalating through diplomacy but naval battles remain a danger for operations as relations are developing between the two sides.
