Tehran Submits New Seven-Day Plan to Reopen Strait of Hormuz, Says Implementation Depends on Washington
NEW YORK : Iran has formally presented a new diplomatic initiative to ease regional tensions, break the maritime blockade and open the sea route of the Strait of Hormuz, via other countries. While speaking to journalists and representatives of foreign policy think tanks at the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi made it clear that as long as the U.S. keeps up its side of the mutually understood conditions, the Strait of Hormuz can be opened, in full, within seven days.
The terms of the new proposal are in harmony with previous understandings, noted Foreign Minister Araghchi.In alignment with the previous pacts: Araghchi said the agreement reflects the consensus on key points in the Islamabad Memorandum and expressed that the accord is based on the previous diplomatic achievements.
Diplomatic Resolution is Urgent: Araghchi noted that it would be better for the deal to be done before the next elections in the US, highlighting diplomatic efforts to move the agreement forward before the country’s midterm elections, which are still to be decided by the US administration.
Tehran stresses that the key elements of the proposal are remain unchanged and remain well-defined, and it now puts Washington on the spot to make a decision whether it wants to end the conflict and return to comprehensive diplomacy.
