Extensive US-Iran Talks Held on UNGA Sidelines as Tehran Puts Forward New Conditions for Regional Stability
NEW YORK : Rare and comprehensive indirect negotiations have been held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session in New York between delegations from the United States and Iran, which have been mediated by various parties to help fill the gaps between the two sides in the midst of the tension in the region.
US President Donald Trump spoke with reporters to give his thoughts on the meeting, in which his special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were present for “constructive discussions” with Iranian officials. But stressing that a key obstacle had to be cleared first, Trump said he was hopeful that “structured dialogue” could lead to progress while saying Iran can never have nuclear weapons. Aides for both sides met all day to wrap up a promising round of talks, confirmed U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff.
In his remarks, Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif affirmed that talks were held through Qatari mediators. Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmail Baghaei and state media reports detailed that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called the American side with clear conditions.
The main conditions imposed by Tehran are:Cessation of Hostilities: An immediate end to the war on all fronts of operations. Lifting Blockades: immediate lifting of naval blockade and economic warfare against Iranian ports, to allow the opening of the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
Unfreezing Assets: Release of all frozen Iranian assets internationally. The Iranian government stressed that the diplomatic track is a golden opportunity for de-escalation, but respect of these terms is crucial for any lasting diplomatic success.
