Jamaat-e-Islami Announces Postponement of Long March Until Meeting with Prime Minister, Warns Struggle Will Continue
ISLAMABAD: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has officially announced that the party is temporarily suspending its long march till it meets direct with PM Shehbaz Sharif upon his return from abroad.
Speaking at a press conference in Multan, Hafiz Naeem said the party was following the Prime Minister’s request for a short break for a couple of days. We have been sitting on the roads for 2 months and are more than ready to sit for 10 months if we need to,” he said, “we are not going to back down from this protest movement.

The JI Emir said the recent petroleum relief announced by the government was “utterly inadequate” as it announced Rs25 billion relief while the government collects Rs150 billion in petroleum levy, and added that the levy is in no way related to the standard retail price.
He said party workers will continue to be vigilant on the ground, and should the government be unable to address the fundamental public concerns in the upcoming negotiations, the long march will begin anew on the basis of an extensive contingency plan.

Speaking on the overall political scenario, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman reiterated that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Islami (PTI) is entitled to all democratic space to protest on September 27, and the government must also engage in substantive talks with them. He underscored “the right to peaceful assembly” as guaranteed by the constitution, for every citizen and political entity.
