Iran and Oman Reach Final Agreement on New Strait of Hormuz Shipping Routes Running Entirely Through Iranian Territorial Waters
MUSCAT: Iran and Oman have signed a final settlement to new maritime navigation routes through the strategic Strait of Hormuz, which will involve a new transit framework, with all control over it now in Iranian hands.
Gulf littoral countries will be formally briefed on the new maritime arrangements, regional media reports said.
The bilateral deal was successfully closed after protracted technical and diplomatic efforts by Muscat and Tehran.The finalized agreement has provided the new inbound shipping route to pass entirely within Iranian waters and some part of the outbound shipping route will pass through Iranian waters as well.
According to official reports, the new shipping lane is likely to be implemented in the framework and under the supervision of Iranian regulations and traffic management. When the new system is complete and operational, the traditional southern path of the Strait of Hormuz will be closed.
