United States Imposes Sweeping Sanctions on 36 Entities and Individuals Over Support for Iran’s Aviation Sector
WASHINGTON: The United States has issued new round of tough sanctions against Iran’s aviation sector, which include dozens of companies and individuals.
So far, 36 entities and individuals from across various jurisdictions have been sanctioned for supporting Iran’s aviation industry, according to the U.S. Department of the Treasury. Washington has told American financial institutions to keep an eye out for and report networks supporting Iranian aviation operations, given that the industry has long been used to smuggle weapons, military personnel or illegal goods.
These apply to Mahan Air supporter networks and suspension of permits.
Further punitive actions have been imposed against companies that have offered logistical, cargo, and general sales support to Iran’s main carrier Mahan Air, the U.S. Treasury said.
What’s more, the administration has put on hold three specific aviation authorizations related to Iran. Any international airline or commercial firm doing business with blacklisted Iranian carriers is at a major risk of being separated from the global finance system, authorities said.
Goal is to reduce funding of IRGC and Government funding.
U.S. officials noted that anyone providing services or equipment to sanctioned airlines from Iran will be subject to “decisive action.
The main goal of these comprehensive actions is to cut off and sever the monetary lifelines and income generating streams used by the Iranian regime and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
