Massive Fire Erupts at Landhi Factory in Karachi, Fire Brigade Declares Third-Degree Emergency
KARACHI: The huge fire at a clothes factory in the Landhi Export Processing Zone (EPZ) has not yet been completely extinguished, leading fire brigade officials to declare it a third degree fire.
Rescue and fire department officials said the fire started in a “warehouse unit” selling used garments and textiles. A large fleet of 16 fire tenders, two snorkels and water bowsers have been brought in to contain the blaze.
The intense heat and dense, noxious smoke pouring from the burning synthetic and textiles stock are greatly impairing rescue efforts, which are carried out mainly from the outside, Rescue Challenges and Intensified SmokeFire officials said.
The fire’s size and vulnerabilities mean that it’s likely to take several more hours to extinguish and cool the debris. Emergency services and local administration are on high alert in order to prevent the fire from spreading to neighbouring industrial units.
