Pakistan Welcomes Permanent Court of Arbitration Ruling on Indus Waters Treaty
ISLAMABAD: The Government of Pakistan has welcomed the historic decision of the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) on the Indus Waters Treaty.
The Government of Pakistan has made it clear that the India is fully committed to implement the Indus Waters Treaty in full. Under the terms of the treaty, the construction and operation of a hydropower project cannot be unilaterally changed and in its judgment the Permanent Court of Arbitration gave significant interim orders.
Rejection of Treaty Suspension and Legal Standing
As per the ruling, the Indus Waters Treaty can’t be suspended in India. International law does not give India any justification to suspend the accord and the Indus Waters Treaty itself does not have any clause for its suspension of its operational provisions.
