Pakistan Makes Largest-Ever Early Debt Repayment
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has repaid a whopping Rs 1,200 billion in debt ahead of schedule and made the biggest single debt repayment in the country’s history.
Adviser to the Minister for Finance Khurram Schezad announced on the social media platform X (former Twitter) that the total early debt repayments reached almost Rs 6,000 billion in Pakistan.
I really believe that a family should have some kind of relief from future financial pressures as well as Milestone Figures.
He said that Pakistan has already paid Rs 5,920 billion in total, ahead of the maturity schedule, which is even better than the previous record of Rs 1,133 billion paid in August 2025.
A total of Rs 2,900 billion of debt has been paid off prematurely so far this fiscal year, 2025–26, Schezad said.
In addition, an extra Rs 1,200 billion has been paid off prematurely in the current fiscal year 2026–27. These hard early repayments will have a major impact on reducing overall debt and easing the severe financial strain of having large debt repayments in the near future, he said.
The Finance Adviser then summarized that Pakistan’s debt management approach is moving away from traditional servicing models and is firmly heading towards enhancing the government’s fiscal position in general.
