No Vessel Can Pass Through Strait of Hormuz Without Permission: Iran

TEHRAN: Ibrahim Azizi, head of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee in the Iranian Parliament, has said no ship was allowed to pass through the Strait of Hormuz without the explicit permission of Iranian’s armed forces.

Ibrahim Azizi said in his statement that the commercial and military vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz “must be cleared in advance by Iranian authorities. In addition, the use of the waterway must be coordinated with the procedures determined by the Navy of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Iran’s officials have also insisted on approved routes and official documents for shipping vessels to sail in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran’s attempt to establish a new fleet that would regulate maritime traffic in the strategic strait has more and more come to the fore. Iranian officials said this is to strictly regulate ships passing through the strait under specific security conditions.

Interestingly, Iran has repeatedly pledged to impose course restrictions and permits on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. In the beginning of May, Tehran had said that some European nations were negotiating with Iran to allow their commercial ships to transship through the waterway.

Earlier this year, however, the Iranian parliament introduced laws on the management of the Strait of Hormuz, which included measures to formalize Iran’s administrative and security claims of the key waterway.
